The look: double-duty denim

Did you know that an extra-high-rise, straight-leg jean is one of the most flattering silhouettes you can wear? By adding a few extra inches to elongate the waistband, your legs will also appear instantly longer. LA-based brand Slvrlake’s mission is to avoid ‘trendy’ denim and, instead, create exactly this kind of timeless, streamlined shape that makes you look and feel good. Its beatnik styles are softly hand-faded, giving them a cool yet elegant finish.

With New York Fashion Week kicking off on September 11 (albeit in a different, predominantly digital guise this season), we’ve been drawn to our favorite NYC-based designers this week. Brands such as The Row, Gabriela Hearst and Khaite, who are known for their exquisite shapes in elevated materials, shine a spotlight on the city’s sartorial expertise. Pair your denims with The Row’s luxe, sky-blue, short-sleeved shirt (buttoned right to the top) and some flat croc-effect sandals by sustainability driven Gabriela Hearst for a grown-up gamine vibe.

For a more glamorous look, pair them with a silk top – Khaite’s asymmetric cami puts an avant-garde twist on a classic negligée style – a white tailored blazer and strappy sandals. Simple gold jewelry, such as hoop earrings and chunky chains, are very en vogue, and make an impact with just one or two pieces. The late American designer Kenneth Jay Lane – who wooed everyone from Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn to Rihanna and Lady Gaga with his boldly opulent designs – was often referred to as the King of Costume Jewelry. These interlocking hoops from his eponymous label are cast from a hollow gold-tone metal, making them super-comfortable to wear. A modernist handbag, such as Staud’s ruched Moon tote, completes the look with a fashion-forward finish.
