The gourd, known as mate in Peru, is the basis of the fine art of the mate burilado. To create this design, Alejandro and his wife use a traditional scalpel called buril to etch fine lines into the gourd to create a series of drawings that usually represent scenes of farming life. The mate makes a great place for jewellery and is a beautiful addition to any dressing table. Each pumpkin is naturally grown. Therefore each Kusi Mate is unique and can vary in size and shape.
